Nemesis Reading #1
The first section of the book starts with Jane Marple, a character that is present in many Agatha Christie books. She has been presented with a propositon from a man she once knew, named Mr. Rafiel, who had just passed away. Mr. Rafiel wrote down the proposition and gave it to his lawyers before his death. The proposition was very vague and unclear, but what was clear was that if Miss Marple had solved some sort of murder case, she would be rewarded twenty thousand pounds. It seems rather odd that Mr. Rafiel would choose Jane Marple to solve the case because she is old, and often batty. Agatha Christie gives many examples of her battiness in this first section that I read. Jane Marple is very inquisitive and she often talks to herself, and goes off into tangents in her own mind. I think Agatha Christie's purpose in using Jane Maple to solve the case is because it makes it more interesting to have an older lady that seems not all there. Having Jane Marple as an investigator will intensify the plot especially because it seems unlikely that an old woman can solve a murder case.
